Monaco CEO Vadim Vasilyev has dropped a strong hint that the club could be considering a move for Newcastle star Yohan Cabaye, according to Sky Sports.

The French midfielder has been a star performer for the Magpies since joining the club from Ligue 1 side Lille, putting himself on the radar of top clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Premier League duo were thought to be keen on signing him this summer, after Cabaye was reportedly considering his future following a disappointing season at St James’ Park.

Despite finishing fifth in 2011/12, they found themselves in a surprise relegation fight this year and Cabaye may be keen to move on to bigger things, along with a number of other Newcastle players.

Monaco are plotting an ambitious summer, and have already brought in big names such as Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez to the club with the backing of their wealthy Russian owner.

Cabaye’s Newcastle team-mate Hatem Ben Arfa has also been linked with the French side, but it seems that it is Cabaye that could be targeted next, according to words from the club’s CEO.

“Yohan Cabaye? He is an exciting player,” Vasilyev has been quoted as saying.
