Newcastle are believed to be keen on a move for defender Douglas Franco Teixeira, who is a free agent after his contract with Dutch side FC Twente expired.

According to the Journal, Alan Pardew’s side are competing with clubs from Italy and Russia for the 25-year-old central defender, as they look to tighten up at the back ahead of next season.

After a difficult season of fighting relegation, and with Fabricio Coloccini likely to leave this summer, Newcastle are also looking at the likes of PSG defender Mamadou Sakho, and West Ham’s James Tomkins.

They have been linked with Douglas in the past, and could now move for their long-term target as he would be available on a free transfer. The Brazilian-born player has been an impressive member of FC Twente’s team since joining in 2007, and is also eligible to play for the Netherlands national team.

He is a tall and uncomprimising centre-back who would certainly adapt well to the nature of the game in the Premier League, and looks a good potential piece of business for Pardew as he looks to get his team back on track.
