New Manchester City head coach Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that defender Maicon is leaving the club this summer, reports the Mail on Sunday.

The experienced Brazil international has only been at Eastlands since the start of last season, having originally been brought to the north west from Serie A giants Inter Milan by previous City boss Roberto Mancini for just £3 million last August.

However, the full back’s signing proved to be an unmitigated disaster for the big-spending club, with the 31-year-old featuring in just the 11 matches overall in all competitions for City, including making only the seven Premier League appearances all campaign long, contributing one assist along the way to the team cause.

Consequently, it will come as little surprise to either the player himself or the club’s fans that the marauding right back has now played his final game for City, with Pellegrini revealing that: “Maicon didn’t come here to the preseason and he will not stay in the squad at Manchester City this year.”

Maicon now looks like moving back to Serie A next season, with Italian outfit AS Roma understood to have lodged a bid of £4m for the Brazilian, who is only contracted to City until June 30 2014.
