The 23 year old is apparently on his way to St James’ Park after Eredivisie giants Ajax and PSV Eindhoven pulled out of the race to sign the Dutch international, leaving the way clear for Magpies boss Alan Pardew.

Newcastle United will apparently pay £8.5m for the former FC Twente man, with Monchengladbach originally having been interested in taking Senegal international Papiss Cisse as part of the deal only for the forward to reject a move back to the Bundesliga.

The club’s sporting director Max Eberl had hinted at progress being made in the deal by stating: “Things tend to happen more towards the end of the transfer window, and we’re moving into that now.”

Newcastle United have been heavily reliant on loaned in forward Loic Remy, with Cisse misfiring, and Pardew will be happy to bring in further striking options as they continue to push for a top six, or even a top four, finish.
