A source close to the club claimed that Manuel Pellegrini was reluctant to splash out so much cash on a player with no Premier League experience, but in the wake of a projected clear out at the end of the season the club will now meet Porto’s £40m valuation and even go above it in order to make sure they win the race.
There is also a reported long-term, lucrative contract already in place for the young France international in the eventuality of the two clubs reaching an agreement.
A transfer deadline day move for Mangala and his midfield team mate Fernando fell through as City were unwilling to meet the asking price, hoping to pay at least £10m less for him at the time.
However, with Matija Nastasic, Joleon Lescott and Martin Demichelis all looking set to move on this summer the need for new central defensive reinforcements is greater than ever.
The source said: “The club will try again and intends to do everything in its power to make the transfer happen.”
