The 19-year-old has impressed during a loan spell with Eredivise big hitters PSV Eindhoven this season, where several scouts from the San Siro have been keeping a close watch on his progress.
The centre-back still has three years remaining on his deal at the Etihad Stadium, but there is yet to be any word on whether manager Manuel Pellegrini hopes to retain his services in Manchester.
But Inter are said to be very keen on landing his signature, with a source close to the club claiming that they want him on a permanent basis rather than on a short term loan deal.
He has made only just two appearances for his parent club, in a League Cup clash with Birmingham City three years ago and in the Premier League against Reading in 2012.
Rekik is a highly-rated young player with a bright future in the game and has already represented the Netherlands at various youth levels including under-17 and under-19 level.
