Midfielder could arrive at City by the end of the week.
Porto midfielder Fernando’s agent has confirmed that his client is hoping to confirm a £16 million transfer to Manchester City by the end of this week, according to Sky Sports.
The 26-year-old had come close to a move to the Premier League champions in January and has continued to be linked with the club over the months since. It now appears that Manuel Pellegrini is going to get his man in the coming days after a lengthy wait.
Fernando’s agent, Antonio Araujo, told Maisfutebol: “Everything is in Porto’s hands and we hope to finalise the transfer by the end of the week.
“Fernando is in the city of Porto waiting for Porto tell him their decision about the documents they have received so that he can travel immediately [to Manchester].”
It now seems very unlikely that the Portuguese side will block a move, despite Fernando being one of their star men, and City will wrap up their first deal of the summer.
Born in Brazil, Fernando attempted to switch nationalities and perform for Portugal at the World Cup. Although he gained Portuguese citizenship, FIFA did not allow the change as he performed for his native country at youth level.
This may have disappointed the player, but it worked in City’s favour as they no longer need a work permit for the naturalised European. Fernando made 36 appearances for Porto last season without scoring a goal.
