The former Lyon man is out of contract and did appear to be on his way to St James’ Park but now Black Cats boss Gus Poyet has expressed an interest in the French international.
Poyet saw midfielder Jack Colback leave the Stadium of Light for local rivals Newcastle United but has already secured deals to bring in West Brom’s Billy Jones and Wigan Athletic midfielder Jordi Gomez and will look to bring in experienced forward Gomis to beef up the Sunderland attack.
28 year old Gomis is a proven goal-scorer and a player who will offer either Newcastle United and Sunderland a strong goal-scoring weapon.
The powerful marksman has scored over 100 goals for Saint-Etienne and Lyon and has a dozen national team caps to his name.
