Juventus star was linked with White Hart Lane before signing a new contract in Turin.

Italy playmaker Andrea Pirlo has refused to deny claims that Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign him earlier this year.

Spurs were said to be keen on the 35-year-old, but he committed his future to Juventus by penning a two-year contract with the Turin club on Wednesday.

The Daily Mail quote Pirlo as saying: “Past interest from Tottenham Hotspur? I don’t know if Italian football is better than English football, but it was my choice to continue with Juventus, which is a place where I’m comfortable and where I can win.”

Pirlo is currently with the Italian national team, preparing for Saturday’s World Cup Group D game against England.

He is expected to win his 110th senior international cap in the match. He has scored 13 goals in his first 109 appearances for the Azzurri.

Pirlo joined Juve from AC Milan, where he had spent 10 years, in July 2011.

He has already won three Serie A titles with the Old Lady, as well as two Supercoppa Italiana crowns.

Pirlo played 30 league games this season, scoring four goals and providing six assists.

Operating in a deep midfield role, he made 43 tackles and 39 interceptions.

He completed 1,832 of 2,070 passes attempted, giving him a completion rate of 88.5 per cent.

Before playing for AC Milan and Juve, Pirlo was at Brescia and Inter Milan.
