City could make swoop for highly-rated Everton starlet.
Manchester City are considering a move for highly promising young Everton defender John Stones this summer after becoming increasingly frustrated in their efforts to sign Eliaquim Mangala from Porto.
The Premier League champions have been keen to bring in a new signing in defence ahead of next season with Manuel Pellegrini seemingly unconvinced by his back four at points last term, despite their title win.
With neither Martin Demichelis or Matija Nastasic managing to impress alongside club captain Vincent Kompany in the middle of the park, the Chilean tactician has made it a priority to recruit a new centre-back in this transfer window, with Mangala previously looking like being the club’s main target.
However, after a long-drawn out effort to negotiate with Porto, it seems that City are becoming impatient over the deal and considering other options, with Everton prospect Stones believed to be top of the list for Pellegrini.
The 20-year-old was outstanding for the Toffees last season, emerging alongside club and international team-mate Ross Barkley as one of the most exciting young players in the Premier League and even Europe with his impressively mature displays at the back for Roberto Martinez’s side.
Everton may be under pressure to sell after spending £28m on the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea this summer, and could cash in on Stones if the right offer comes along, though it could take over £20m to lure him away from Goodison Park.
City won’t be too wary about over-spending, with Managala likely to cost over £30m if he does eventually move to the Etihad Stadium, and Stones would be another player that would represent a long-term investment for the club.
The likes of Roma defender Mehdi Benatia and Real Madrid’s Pepe have also been linked with City in recent times, but it is now believed that they will look closer to home for a top class defensive signing, and they will look to test Everton’s resolve for the player within the next few days if they fail to make any further progress with Mangala.
The French international has been linked with other Premier League clubs in the past, and it may be that he is awaiting offers from Chelsea and Manchester United, whom he has previously stated a preference for joining over City.
Stones, meanwhile, has also been linked with big names such as Arsenal and Chelsea in the past.
