Tottenham Hotspur are close to signing centre back Federico Fazio from La Liga outfit Sevilla, reports journalist Tancredi Palmeri, who suggests that the Argentinian has a 10 million Euro buyout clause.

This could mean that Spurs’ move for Villarreal central defender Mateo Musacchio, a fellow Argentine, could be dead in the water, after the link went cold.

Fazio would represent a far cheaper solution in central defence than Musacchio, but he has an excellent reputation as as solid defender and has played almost 150 matches in the Spanish top flight for Sevilla.

The 27 year-old arrived at the current Europa League Winners from Buenos Aires-based club Ferro in 2007, becoming a key part of an excellent period in Sevilla’s history, in which they have been particularly successful in continental competition.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have already signed two defenders – but new manager Mauricio Pochettino seems to have pinpointed it as the area of his team that must be strengthened.

He has already signed young Englishman Eric Dier, from Sporting Lisbon, who scored the winner on his debut against West Ham United deep into injury time on Saturday, whilst left back Ben Davies has also signed from Premier League rivals Swansea City.
