Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has told reporters that Liverpool wound not have deserved to win the Premier League title – had they done so last season.
Goal.com have reported the comments from the Chilean, who was speaking ahead of Liverpool’s visit to City on Monday evening, where the two side’s face off in an early ‘six-pointer’ that could prove crucial come the end of the campaign.
Liverpool were the favourites to win the league after they beat City 3-2 at Anfield, but a fortnight later their hopes were dashed by a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea, and were compounded by a 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace.
Steven Gerrard’s slip allowed Demba Ba to open the scoring as Jose Mourinho’s side frustrated Liverpool for large parts of that Anfield clash. That allowed City to steal in, winning their last five games to move ahead and seal a second title in three years, which Pellegrini believes was the right outcome.
“Of course, Gerrard was unlucky in that game, but Liverpool were not unlucky to miss out,” Pellegrini said.
“Though we lost at Anfield we never felt the other team was better than us, or deserved to win the title. We felt we should have won the game and it just made us more determined to win the rest.”
