Townsend wasn’t in the squad as Tottenham Hotspur obliterated Queens Park Rangers this afternoon – and the performance of Erik Lamela in his side’s 4-0 victory over a dismal QPR side.
The Englishman was involved in the midweek Europa League victory over AEL Limassol in Cyprus, but he was substituted after a disappointing performance that could be his final appearance for Spurs.
Southampton are still looking to improve their squad and spend some of the huge windfall they received from the sales of the likes of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Dejan Lovren this summer – with another creative attacker for new signing Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez, once he returns from injury, to thrive off appearing to be high on Ronald Koeman’s shopping list.
Townsend, whose Spurs career has largely been defined by loan spells at clubs such as Leyton Orient, Millwall and Queens Park Rangers, burst onto the scene under Andre Villas-Boas, earning himself an England call-up in the process, but became more peripheral in the final months of last season.
