Five Conclusions On The Premier League Title Race As Arsenal & Liverpool Slip Up This Weekend

3) Gunners’ defence letting them down

As the weeks go by it looks increasingly mad that Arsene Wenger did not dip into the transfer market for a defender or defensive midfielder, with the Gunners still looking very fragile at the back. Both of Manchester City’s goals yesterday were avoidable, with the second one a particular worry for Arsenal fans. With just minutes remaining at the Emirates, the defence really switched off to allow Martin Demichelis an easy jump before heading the ball home and snatch two points in the process.

Arsenal will welcome Kieran Gibbs’ return from injury, as Nacho Monreal looked suspect at left-back, but Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny also need competition for their places after unconvincing displays here. Mathieu Flamini gave an energetic performance as the team’s main defensive midfielder, but it is clear that more is needed in that position as well, or Arsenal will continue to come up short in these games against the big sides.
