Louis van Gaal has reportedly turned his eye towards other targets, leaving the Gunners with a relatively clear run at Hummels.
The United boss appears to be competing with Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool for the signature of Dutch 19-year-old Daley Sinkgraven, an Under-21 international who van Gaal knows well.
Hummels claimed during the summer that he had no intention of leaving Dortmund, but with their woeful current form in the Bundesliga they currently find themselves in 15th place; a massive 14 points off the top spot with just nine games played.
Arsenal are in dire need of defensive reinforcements at the moment with a number of injuries to key players threatening to derail their season. Hummels could be the perfect long term replacement for the ageing Per Mertesacker whose lack of pace and agility is already considered a liability at times.
