The Argentine wide-man has been poor at White Hart Lane since his eagerly-anticipated £30m move from AS Roma last summer, when he became the club’s record signing and ideal man to come in and replace the departing Gareth Bale as he left for Real Madrid.

However, Lamela has not managed to settle in to Premier League football, looking a shadow of the player who lit up Serie A during his time at the Stadio Olimpico and sparking various rumours of a return to Italy.

Napoli now appear to be leading the chase for his signature as the January transfer window approaches, with manager Rafael Benitez seeking to strengthen in attack after an inconsistent start to the 2014/15 season.

Lamela could prove a useful signing for Napoli if he can regain the form he showed earlier in his career, though it remains to be seen if Spurs will be willing to let him go for just over half of what they initially paid to sign him last year.
