Lambert was heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa, but a deal did not materialise, leaving the Reds with four senior forwards on their books – the former Southampton star, as well as Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Daniel Sturridge.

Ings, who is in the final six months of his contract, is expected to agree a summer move to Anfield in the coming weeks.

However, Liverpool will first have to convince the Premier League that such a deal will not damage the integrity of the competition.

According to The Independent, the Reds will be successful in this, despite Burnley being due to visit Anfield in early March.

The newspaper is confident that the Premier League will rule that Ings, 22, will not have a conflict of interests when his current team plays his future employers.
