The first 45 minutes was a half of few chances for both sides, with little to be spoken of other than this striker over the bar by Leandro Paredes.

It took 65 minutes for the ball to finally hit the back of the net, and it came from Fiorentina striker Gomez.

A near-post run saw the striker get lucky with his finish as he got a little help from the far post after flicking on Manuel Pasqual’s cross to mark his first goal of the match.

The German could have got an unusual second goal after mis-kicking the ball which looped onto the cross-bar. It wouldn’t have counted, however, as the 29-year-old was ruled offside.

Nevertheless, Gomez doubled the Italian outfit’s lead when with just one minute of normal time to go to secure their place in the last four of the Italian cup, leaving Roma stunned.

The same duo combined for the second goal, as Gomez again latched onto a ball by Pasqual, and after the defender committed himself too early, the striker fired home with great composure.
