The Magpies opted to appoint John Carver as temporary fix until the end of the current campaign but appear keen to bring in a more experienced manager as a long term option.

Benitez spent six years in charge at Liverpool before leaving Anfield for Inter Milan in 2010, lasting less than six months at the San Siro, before finding himself at the San Paolo.

The 54 year old has done a decent job in Naples but could be tempted by a return to the Premier League.

During his stint on Merseyside Benitez secured a Champions League triumph as well as a Premier League runners-up finish in 2008/09.

Newcastle United allowed Alan Pardew to leave St James’ Park for Crystal Palace in early January, having agreed a compensation package with the South London side, and have struggled for form since doing so.
