The former Red Devils man has been working as a pundit for Sky Sports as well as in his post as assistant manager of the national team.

Butcher believes that the 40-year-old could take a similar route into management as Germany manager Joachim Low.

The ex-England skipper said: “Roy Hodgson’s grooming Gary Neville on his staff and he could be England manager when Roy leaves. We’ve never had that with England. Germany did it with Jurgen Klinsmann and Joachim Low – and look how that turned out. It’s very positive.

“It might be a bit premature to talk about a new contract for Roy but you need some stability. The players need to know which manager is going to be there.”

England’s next games are up against Lithuania and Italy at the end of the month, with the team starting to gear up before the Euros in 18 months. Tottenham star Harry Kane has been driving home a claim for a first call up to the squad following a brilliant season at the North London club.
