The 24-year-old Argentine looks a top talent after some impressive displays in the Portuguese top flight, and Benfica are unwilling to let him go for less than his £43m release clause.

Liverpool face the worrying prospect of losing Raheem Sterling to Man City as the England starlet stalls on signing a new contract, and Salvio could be an ideal replacement.

Still, it remains to be seen if the Reds will try some cheaper options as £43m would smash their previous transfer record.
