Ligue 1 strugglers OGC Nice highlighted Olympique Lyonnais’ failings as they recorded a shocking 2-1 away victory over the league leaders.
Defeat has cost Lyon the number one spot in the division. While they began the weekend in first, two points clear of Paris Saint-Germain, they will end it one point behind Laurent Blanc’s side.
It was Nice who opened the scoring, Brazilian midfielder Carlos Eduardo stunning the Lyon defence with an audacious overhead kick on 23 minutes.
Lyon responded well, and their class told as new France international Nabil Fekir darted into the box and drew a foul from Lloyd Palun. The Gabon full-back had already been booked and was dismissed, while captain Maxime Gonalons made no mistake from the spot.
At this point, Hubert Fournier’s side ought to have gone on to secure the victory, particularly in front of their own fans with a man advantage.
However, it wasn’t to be, and Nice stole a late, unlikely, valuable three point haul.
Bakary Kone fouled Alassane Plea and Valentin Eysseric fired an emphatic penalty past the unfortunate Anthony Lopes.
