Monaco vs. Rennes Ligue 1 preview: Can ASM consolidate third place?

In-form AS Monaco welcome Stade Rennais to the Stade Louis II on Saturday looking to consolidate their hold on third place.

When: 7.00 pm GMT, 18 April 2015

Where: Stade Louis II, Monte Carlo

Over the last few weeks, Monaco’s excellent league form has seen them overtake stuttering Olympique de Marseille to take the final Champions League spot in the Ligue 1 log.

OM’s unlikely defeat against FC Nantes on Friday evening means that ASM head into Saturday’s game against Rennes knowing that a victory would give them a four-point lead over the Southern giants.

Leonardo Jardim’s side will be looking to return to winning ways having been defeated by Juventus in midweek, but will surely be thinking about next week’s second leg.

However, with Monaco’s defence looking almost impermeable, and with Anthony Martial and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco glittering in attack, the Club of the Principality should have enough to overcome midtable Rennes.

Victory would also take ASM to within three points of leaders Lyon, a fact that will surely not be lost on the coach.
