With a return to the Champions League all but certain, the Dutch manager is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the increased number of games next season and is thought to be after a centre-forward, right-back, central defender as well as a centre midfielder.
PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay will officially join the Red Devils next month and it appears that van Gaal wants to further boost his attacking options with the signing of Kane, who has struck 30 goals for Spurs in all competitions this season.
The North London outfit will be expected to fight tooth and nail to keep hold of the England international but a bid in excess of £45million could tempt them into selling their best player to United once again.
The news comes after it was reported by The Guardian that United chief executive Ed Woodward promised that the club will be very active in the summer transfer window.
