The Blues have bid farewell to veteran forward Didier Drogba at the end of this season, with Jose Mourinho arguably in need of another backup option up front, due to both Diego Costa and Loic Remy spending significant time out injured throughout the 2014/15 campaign.

Benteke, meanwhile, has been in superb form since returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines for Villa, scoring 12 goals in his final 12 games of the season to attract interest from several top clubs.

According to the Daily Star, Chelsea are now joining the long list of teams pursuing the prolific Belgian international, with Mourinho possibly ready to activate the player’s £32.5m release clause.

The 24-year-old is certainly good enough to play for a bigger club, but it may be that he’d struggle to play as regularly at Stamford Bridge as he might if he chose a move to Arsenal, Liverpool or United instead.
