The right-back has just one year left on his contract with the Saints, and doesn’t look likely to sign a new deal. Despite this the South coast club still want around £12 million for their star defender. This could let the Red Devils in to the race if their Merseyside rivals don’t increase their offer.

The 24-year-old has been brilliant this season helping Southampton to concede just 33 goals in the Premier League, which is one more than champions Chelsea who had the best defence in the top flight. His form has also brought international honours. Clyne made his full England debut last November and looks set to play at right-back for the Three Lions for years to come.

Liverpool are extra keen to sign what would be their fourth arrival from the St. Mary’s in just over a year due to the departure of Glen Johnson. Manager Brendan Rodgers has also had to deal with full-back Jon Flanagan being ruled out long term with a knee problem.
