Tottenham are favourites to sign Atletico Madrid star and Southampton loanee Toby Alderweireld, reports the Sunday Times.
This is despite Premier League champions Chelsea being interested in the 26-year-old according to the Daily Telegraph. With Belgium teammate Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane the defender feels a move there would help him further his claims to be an important part of his national team at Euro 2016.
Able to play at centre-back or right-back, the Belgian impressed on loan with the Saints in the last campaign. He played 26 games as part of one of the best defences in the Premier League. Only Chelsea conceded less goals than the South coast side, who let in 33 as they managed to finish seventh despite several high profile departures the summer before.
The St. Mary’s outfit have an option to sign Alderweireld for a mere £5.7 million as a part of that deal, and are keen to do so. However, Atleti can cancel this for £2 million, and have been offering him elsewhere to see if they can get more money for the versatile player.
