The 32 year old Portuguese international has a year to run on his current contract and as such could be snapped up for a reasonable fee, this source claiming the Bernabeu side would demand around £10.5m for the defender, though one wonders why Jose Mourinho would be making a move for the experienced veteran.

The Blues have a number of central defensive options and whilst John Terry may well be heading towards the latter stages of his Chelsea career there seems no reason the West London side would target an aging replacement.

Mourinho knows Pepe well from his time in charge of FC Porto and Real Madrid but it’s unlikely he would look to team up with the defender for a third time.

Man City are also said to be keen and a move to the Etihad Stadium may prove more likely.
