The 26 year old spent last season on loan at Southampton, who are also keen on snapping up the Belgian international, and impressed sufficiently to attract the attention of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Atletico Madrid want around £14m for the versatile defender, who can play either at full-back or in a central defensive role, and the former Ajax man may well be keen to reunite with his former team-mate and fellow countryman Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane.

Pochettino’s side conceded more goals than any other side in the top half of the Premier League in 2014/15 and as such it’s not a big surprise that the North London side would be looking to strengthen their defence with Burnley’s Kieran Trippier having already been signed this summer.
