Chelsea target two superb young defenders signings as fears over John Terry’s Blues future persist

Chelsea captain John Terry was unceremoniously hauled off at half-time during his side’s 3-0 defeat at Man City, and unsurprisingly, the 34-year-old star’s future at Stamford Bridge has now been called into question.

The Daily Mail states that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is keeping a close eye on Everton starlet John Stones and Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane, two of the best young defenders in world football.

Mourinho has seen his side ship five goals in their opening two Premier League fixtures and has publicly stated his unhappiness with seven of his first-team stars (via Sky Sports), four of those who came in for a hammering were his back-line.

As a comparison, it took Chelsea until just their second Premier League fixture to suffer their first defeat, last term Mourinho’s men didn’t taste defeat until they lost away at Newcastle United in early December, fully 15 games into the campaign, so one can see why the Blues boss would be concerned.

The Daily Mail state that Chelsea are set to make a fourth offer for John Stones, in the region of £34m, and point out that Real Madrid are unlikely to allow highly-rated French international Varane to leave this summer.

Mourinho knows Varane well from his time in charge at Real Madrid, indeed it was the Chelsea manager who brought in the 22-year-old from Lens back in 2011.
