Arsenal move to sign PSG star Edinson Cavani before transfer window closes

Arsenal have set their sights on PSG forward Edinson Cavani after seeing long-term target Karim Benzema commit his future to Real Madrid, according to the Daily Mirror.

Arsene Wenger saw his Gunners draw a second successive home blank on Monday night, Arsenal drawing 0-0 with Liverpool, and would do well to bring in a potent finisher to lead his Arsenal attack.

Once again, Olivier Giroud was found wanting against the Reds, and Arsenal are short of the prolific finisher needed to help the North London side to mount a genuine push for major honours.

Giroud’s tally of 59 goals in 138 appearances since his 2012 move from Montpellier is simply not consistent enough for a player who is currently Arsenal’s first-choice central striking weapon.

Cavani’s tally of 56 goals in his opening two seasons at the Parc des Princes is all the more noteworthy given that PSG boss Laurent Blanc has primarily used the South American in a wide attacking role.

The powerful forward has scored regularly wherever he has pitched up, and his record of 104 goals in three seasons at Napoli is testament to the fact that the Uruguayan international is especially deadly when acting as the spearhead of an attack.

PSG signed Cavani in a £55m deal back in 2013 (via BBC Sport) and he has helped the big-spending French side to back-to-back Ligue 1 titles in his two seasons at the club.
