Liverpool transfer news: Klopp eyeing Barcelona defender

Posted by

Liverpool are considering a January move for Barcelona defender Martin Montoya, according to reports.

The Corriere dello Sport [as per the Daily Mirror] report that the Reds, who are long-term admirers of the versatile stopper, could be set to make concrete their interest in the player during the upcoming transfer window.

Liverpool Transfer News: Could Klopp end right-back’s unhappy loan spell?

The defender—who features as a right-back but who can also play on the left of the defence—is currently on loan at Inter Milan, but the Merseyside giants would be looking to liberate him early from his unhappy stay in Lombardy.

The 24-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a key player at Barcelona, with Dani Alves the undisputed first choice on the right side of the defence.

A move to Inter offered him the chance to re-establish himself as a star man at a European heavyweight, but has failed to make a mark in Serie A and is yet to feature for Roberto Mancini’s high flyers.

Should Klopp get his man, Montoya may well challenge Nathaniel Clyne for the right-back berth, while he could also cover for left-back Alberto Moreno, and may stand more chance of unseating his compatriot to secure a role in the first XI.

Similarly, if Real Madrid make concrete their reported interest in Moreno [Marca via the Daily Star], Montoya could emerge as an unlikely contender to start on the left for Klopp’s Anfield heavyweights.
