Liverpool miss out on Jurgen Klopp protégé as Bundesliga side complete wideman deal

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have missed out on the chance to sign Galatasaray wideman Kevin Grosskreutz.

According to ESPN, the 27-year-old has completed a move back to the Bundesliga, joining Stuttgart after six miserable months in Turkey.

The international switched to Istanbul during the summer, but an administrative error meant that he was unable to play for the Super Lig giants, leading to half a season of stasis. However, he’s finally made his escape from Gala and will return to his homeland.

The Telegraph [via the Mirror] reported in December that the German coach was keen on bringing his compatriot to Anfield, seeing the versatile Grosskreutz—who can play up and down both flanks in defensive or offensive roles—as an ideal option to Liverpool’s squad.

The two men enjoyed great success together at Borussia Dortmund, where Klopp oversaw much of the 27-year-old’s development, and they twice lifted the Bundesliga together and reached the Champions League final in 2013.

Grosskreutz also has a World Cup winner’s medal, having been part of the Germany squad that defeated Argentina in 2014.
