Video: Georginio Wijnaldum provides instant reply to superb Manchester United goal

Manchester United seemingly put all their troubles behind them as they took a 2-1 half-time lead at Newcastle United on Tuesday night, with Jesse Lingard finishing off a brilliant counter attack to give them a two-goal cushion.

However, Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum ensured that the hosts had something to cheer about heading into the interval as his wonderfully-taken goal reduced their arrears.

United had taken the lead after just nine minutes, as Chancel Mbemba handled in the box to give Wayne Rooney the opportunity to make it three goals in three games.

The England captain made no mistake as he stroked the ball into the back of the net to hand Louis van Gaal the perfect start in what was an important game for the Dutchman.

Having had to rely on a last-gasp penalty to see off Sheffield United in the FA Cup at the weekend, the former Ajax boss had again come under fire for the lack of attacking intent that his side was showing.

However, the Red Devils showed what they are capable of with some entertaining and flowing football at times, which resulted in Lingard scoring an excellent goal that would have given United fans reason to be hopeful.

Whether or not they can return home with all three points remains to be seen, as an on emotional night at St James’ Park where the hosts have paid tribute to former goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek, the Magpies will now come out for the second half with the game still in the balance.
