Video: Klopp uses BIZARRE metaphor to describe derby love ahead of Liverpool v. Manchester United

Posted by

Jurgen Klopp has a way with words, but his latest outburst—speaking ahead of this week’s Premier League derby between Liverpool and Manchester United—rivals his best.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, as covered in vivid technicolor by Liverpool fan blog Empire of the Kop, the German coach has dipped deep into his colourful array of catchphrases and buzzwords to paint a delightful picture of one of the biggest matches in the football calendar.

“I understand derbies,” the German coach began, attempting to convince the Merseyside press that he was taking Sunday’s fixture seriously, “I love derbies.

“To be honest, it’s the salt in the  soup.”

Let that sink in.

The salt in the soup.

Could you explain that one to us please, Jurgen? Even by the eccentric coach’s standards, this one feels exceptionally esoteric.

After carefully thinking things through, we’ve come to the conclusion that the former Borussia Dortmund manager means that he values derbies as the secret ingredient, the added detail, in a league season which can make all the difference to a campaign as a whole.

And United v. Liverpool, with the Red Devils stumbling and the ambitious Merseysiders facing problems of their own, could be just that.

Any German readers though, if we’re not on the right track, please…please…point us in the right direction!
