Joel Matip rejects new Schalke contract to clear path for Liverpool move

Schalke defender Joel Matip has turned down the offer of a new contract with the club and the Daily Star is now claiming that he has done so in order to seal a move to Liverpool.

The Reds have been tracking the 24-year-old for some time now and have been keen to snap him up on a free transfer at the end of the season.

And there is now nothing to stand in their way to land the Cameroon international after he knocked the Bundesliga giants back in their attempts to tie him to a new deal.

Matip is thought to be keen on a move overseas and is expected to make an announcement over his future at some point over the coming week.

Liverpool are still thought to be favourites to wrap up his services and could now make an offer to land him on a Bosman free transfer.
