Man United player ratings from 5-1 win over Midtjylland – Depay shines & unlikely hero Rashford steps up

Manchester United made hard work of a team considered minnows in the Europa League, but after finding their groove in the second half they really switched up a gear.

Goals from Ander Herrera, Memphis Depay, and Marcus Rashford saw them through to the next round, with the Danish side breaking under extreme pressure from the Red Devils.

Here’s how we rate the players from their 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland:

GK) Sergio Romero – 5.0

He barely had anything to do, but when called upon he disappointed. You have to imagine David de Gea would have kept out the goal Romero conceded.

RB) Guillermo Varela – 7.5

An assist and a superb defensive display, Varela looks hugely promising and capable of being a real attacking threat from full-back.

LB) Joe Riley – 7.0

A decent performance, no nonsense, carried the ball forward well, and provided support for Memphis Depay.

CB) Michael Carrick – 5.5

A fairly average display from the veteran, who was sloppy on the ball occasionally and generally had a fairly poor game.

CB) Daley Blind – 6.5

Far more comfortable than his centre-back partner, but still not a great performance. He’s been arguably our best defender this season, but was distinctly average against the Danes.

DM) Morgan Schneiderlin – 7.5

With Midtjylland rarely causing much of an attacking threat, the Frenchman was able to get forward regularly. He was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions, and was heavily involved in a lot of good build up.

CM) Ander Herrera – 7.5

A goal and an assist, the Spaniard was solid in midfield. He made several great runs, and played a large part in the victory.

CAM) Juan Mata – 7.5

Despite missing a penalty that could have been crucial, the Spaniard had a really solid game. He was dictating things while also getting involved further up the field. He was involved in many of  the goals, and really showed his quality at times.

RAM) Jesse Lingard – 7.5

Didn’t have quite as much success as his fellow forwards, but still caused the defence real problems. He was correctly booked for diving, and seemed to struggle with the referee more than the Midtjylland defenders.

LAM) Memphis Depay – 9.0

He got the goal he deserved in the end, with the Dutchman unquestionably the best player on the pitch. His pace and trickery was far too much for the Danish side, and he was causing them problems all night.

ST) Marcus Rashford – 8.5

What a debut from young Rashford! Only in the side because of last minute injuries, he really took his chance by bagging two goals to seal the win.
