Liverpool & Chelsea suffer snag in transfer war for Roma star

Chelsea and Liverpool have had their eyes on Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic for some time now. The Bosnia and Herzegovina star is coming off one of his best seasons in Serie A as well as strong performances in the Champions League. But the two Premier League giants’ respective pursuits of Pjanic may have a problem prying him from Italy this summer.

According to Transfer Tavern via TalkSport, Roma manager Luciano Spalletti has insisted that Pjanic is happy at Roma and has no interest in leaving the Champions League-bound club next season.

“We’ll evaluate things.,” Spalletti said.

“He said to me that he wants to stay, so if he’s happy, I’m happy. Roma put on a show, and it’s clear that some of our players are targets for other clubs. But these are the same players I have contact with every day, and they assured me they want to stay at Roma.

“We have to further evaluate it of course, because it happens in football that one club takes a player from another club. We’ll evaluate, but the players want to keep wearing our shirt.”

The report comes on the heels of rumours that Serie A champions Juventus were trying to land the 26-year-old midfielder – rumours that were dashed by Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri himself as recently as this week.

Pjanic scored a career-high 10 goals for Roma and finished tied for the most assists in Serie A with 12 – his second straight year as the top assist provider in Italy.
