Chelsea secure first of six planned summer signings, will be revealed on July 1

Chelsea have reportedly made their first summer signing and while supporters will have to wait until July 1 to find out who it is, there are early hints.

Speculation has been rife this past week that all is not well with Antonio Conte, who has been linked with making a shock exit from the club as relations are seemingly at breaking point.

However, this report paints a different picture, as planning is already seemingly underway ahead of next season with Chelsea securing their first signing.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea will look to make up to six signings this summer to bolster their squad, and it’s needed especially with their return to the Champions League.

Further, they’ve made their first signing after agreeing on terms with the player, but confirmation won’t arrive until the start of next month. It’s suggested by the Standard that the player in question is Willy Caballero, who was released by Manchester City earlier this summer.

With Chelsea looking for a back-up goalkeeper after selling Asmir Begovic to Bournemouth, the 35-year-old shot-stopper could be a very sensible addition. Set to arrive on a free, he has Premier League experience, has played at the highest level and is an all-round experienced player who can offer a lot in the dressing room.

In turn, it’s a good start to the summer with the report claiming that Romelu Lukaku and Tiemoue Bakayoko are amongst the remaining targets, but time will tell if Chelsea are as successful in prising them away from their current clubs.

Negotiations for Caballero stepped up over the past week and the plan is to present him at the start of July. It may not be a marquee signing to really excite fans, but it’s certainly one of the smartest signings Chelsea will make this summer as a goalkeeper happy to sit behind Thibaut Courtois was desperately needed.
