Man Utd player ratings vs Swansea City: 8/10 Lingard seals 2-0 win, but more concern for Mourinho

Man Utd took a step closer to defending their League Cup crown with a comfortable 2-0 win over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night.

After the disappointment of the defeat to Huddersfield Town at the weekend, Jose Mourinho would have been looking for a reaction from his players, and they delivered a solid performance.

Two excellent finishes from Jesse Lingard was the difference between the two sides, with the first coming courtesy of a sublime assist from Marcus Rashford, as seen in the clip below.

It’s only the third time in six years that United have reached the last eight of the competition, but judging from the team that Mourinho put out, he’s certainly taking it seriously and is intending on making the most of his squad depth to compete on various fronts.

Lingard unsurprisingly takes our Man of the Match award having scored the goals to seal Man Utd’s passage into the next round, while Chris Smalling and Axel Tuanzebe also score highly after commanding displays in the heart of the defence for the visitors.

In contrast, Victor Lindelof gave Mourinho more reason for concern with another shaky outing as the Swede looks to be short of confidence having come under fire at the weekend for his costly error in the build-up to Huddersfield’s second goal. In turn, he may well need to be managed carefully moving forward to get back to top form.

All in all though, it was a successful night’s work for the Red Devils, who will now wait to see who they will face in the quarter-finals. For now, the more immediate focus will be on this weekend’s showdown with Tottenham, as Mourinho will be desperate to avoid another league setback as rivals Man City continue to stretch their lead and move away at the top of the standings.

Man Utd player ratings: Romero 6; Lindelof 5, Smalling 7, Tuanzebe 7; Darmian 7, Herrera 7, McTominay 6, Blind 6; Lingard 8, Rashford 6, Martial 6.

Substitutes: Shaw N/A, Matic 6, Lukaku 6.
