Man Utd transfer boost: PL rivals willing to consider offers for £55m+ target

Man Utd continue to be linked with a move for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, and the latest reports suggest that they may have been handed a boost.

As per the Evening Standard, the Belgian international was paired with a move to Old Trafford again on Thursday with the report claiming that Spurs want £55m+ for their defensive ace.

United are specifically mentioned in that report as an interested party, as they are by Sky Sports too who now claim that Alderweireld will see Tottenham consider offers for him along with Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele before the transfer deadline next week.

While that doesn’t necessarily guarantee that Spurs will accept any offer that Man Utd potentially make, it does give an indication as to their stance on the matter as perhaps if their demands are satisfied, then the 29-year-old could be on the move before next week.

It’s difficult to see why Jose Mourinho would need to strengthen that area of his squad as a priority though, particularly given that the Portuguese tactician already has Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo at his disposal to play in central defence.

With that in mind, a move for Alderweireld wouldn’t seem to make too much sense unless a player is offloaded first, but as noted by both the Standard and Sky Sports, Man Utd seem to be the club heavily linked with the Belgian ace.

It’s no surprise given Alderweireld has been a defensive pillar for Spurs since joining them in 2015, making 115 appearances for the club as he’s established himself as a key figure under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, with a possible exit now set to be given the green light by Spurs, it could be a setback as they continue to push on in search of winning major honours.
