The key figure at Chelsea who blocked Eden Hazard from sealing ‘dream’ Real Madrid transfer

The summer transfer window has closed for Premier League clubs after today’s 5pm deadline and Eden Hazard remains a Chelsea player.

The Belgium international has been linked for many years with a move to Real Madrid, and with two years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, talk had seemed to hot up of a potential departure this summer.

The Daily Mail were among those linking Hazard with Real, who of course just signed his fellow countryman from CFC in the form of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Still, Chelsea have done well to hold on to their star and will hope he can extend that contract, though for the time being they should simply be happy to have such a world class performer as they go into the new season.

Last year was a tough one for the Blues, who responded by replacing Antonio Conte with new manager Maurizio Sarri, who could certainly have done without losing another big name.

According to Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur, Chelsea fans have club director Marina Granovskaia to thank for keeping Hazard, having refused to negotiate with Madrid despite it being his ‘dream’ to move to the Bernabeu.

‘After six wonderful years at Chelsea it might be time to discover something different. I can decide if I want to stay or go, but Chelsea will make the final decision if they want to let me go,’ Hazard was quoted in the Guardian after the World Cup.

‘For my career, certainly after this World Cup, I’m at a moment where I might change. We all know that I’ve always felt well at Chelsea, so … I’ve been linked to all the big clubs. Next week it will be Bayern. No, I’m joking. You all know my preferred destination.’
