Real Madrid cut transfer shortlist to two names with £99m superstar, 56-goal marksman on radar

Real Madrid are reportedly setting their sights on either Mauro Icardi or Timo Werner in the final week of the summer transfer window.

Los Blancos saw Cristiano Ronaldo depart earlier this summer as he secured a switch to Juventus, and as of yet, they haven’t moved to fill the void the Portuguese superstar has left behind.

Given he bagged 44 goals in 44 games last season and enjoyed a trophy-laden nine-year stint at the Bernabeu, it seems a real risk from Julen Lopetegui’s perspective not to bolster his attacking options.

While they have made a strong start to the La Liga campaign, with Gareth Bale scoring two in two while Karim Benzema has found some early form too, it remains to be seen whether or not they strengthen that area of the squad with the deadline fast approaching in Spain on Friday.

According to Don Balon, only two names now remain on their transfer shortlist, with Inter captain Mauro Icardi and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner said to be of interest in order to add quality and competition up front alongside Benzema.

This isn’t the first time that either player has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, as the Metro noted earlier this month that the Spanish giants were plotting a £99m swoop for Icardi, who has been prolific for Inter in recent seasons, scoring 107 goals in 183 games for the club.

As for Werner, ESPN note how Madrid have already been linked with the 22-year-old, who has 56 career goals in 180 outings, with 42 of those goals coming in the last two seasons since he joined Leipzig to show he is developing well.

In turn, both players seemingly boast the goalscoring records that would make them smart additions for Real Madrid, but time will tell if either makes the move to the Spanish capital before the end of the week.
