Newcastle United are disappointed to have missed out on signing Andrey Santos.

That’s according to journalist Dean Jones, who believes the Brazilian midfielder has snubbed a moved to St James’ Park and is instead set to join Chelsea in a deal worth around £10m.

It was widely expected that Eddie Howe’s Magpies would launch an offer for the 18-year-old, but after dragging their heels, they appear to have now been pipped to the teenager by their domestic rivals.

“Other ones in terms of Newcastle is attacking midfielder, we know it’s something that they like, they really liked Santos, who’s ended up going to Chelsea,” Jones said.

“They’re actually really disappointed not to have got further in the conversation on that one.

“I think they’re a bit frustrated, but they’re going to try and move on from it quickly. These things happen especially when you’re now competing with the real elite of the Premier League.”

Since being promoted to Vasco’s senior first-team 12 months ago, Santos, who already has caps for Brazil’s under-20s to his name, has gone on to feature in 37 matches, in all competitions, directly contributing to eight goals along the way.
