Klopp gives Liverpool green light for new defensive signing this summer

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is said to have given the green light for a new centre-back to arrive at the club this summer.

That’s according to Football Insider, who claims that the Reds could also look to sign three new midfielders in the next transfer window.

It’s been an underwhelming season for the red side of Merseyside, they currently sit sixth in the Premier League, six points off a top-four finish and an astounding 22 points behind Arsenal at the top of the table.

The 2022/23 campaign could be their lowest points tally since the 2015/16 season where they finished sixth on 60 points in Klopp’s first season in charge.

With that in mind, it makes a lot of sense that the German is reportedly looking at new recruits in defence and in the midfield.

Liverpool’s centre-back options consist of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Nathaniel Phillips.

Matip and van Dijk are both entering their 30s, Gomez has been very injury-prone and Phillips has struggled to become a first-team regular on a consistent basis.

With teams like Newcastle United and Aston Villa asserting themselves as top-six challengers this season, it’s clear that Liverpool need to do something to counteract this and prevent those clubs from progressing ahead of them.

Adding new recruits to the squad could be the answer to stop the Reds from slipping further and further down the table in seasons to come.
