Aston Villa ace Douglas Luiz’s Man City buyback clause clarified

Aston Villa’s current form under Unai Emery is an absolute joy to watch, and no player appears more in tune with what his manager wants than Douglas Luiz.

The 25-year-old Brazilian has got a new lease of life under Emery, and his two goals against West Ham at the weekend was another example of just how important he can be to the team.

Luiz was a former employee of Man City of course, though it’s believed owing to work permit issues, he wasn’t able to make an appearance at the current treble winners, instead being loaned to City Group outfit, Girona.

According to the Manchester Evening News, City initially retained a buyback clause on the player, but that apparently expired in 2021.

The report does go on to mention the existence of a sell on clause, however.

This would perhaps go some way to explaining why Arsenal’s three bids for the 25-year-old in the transfer window were rebuffed by the Villains.

Given the form he’s in at present, it’s hard to believe the Midlands-based side would accept any offers for the player, though if they were mindful to do so, it would likely have to be above market value in order that Villa retain any amount they consider an acceptable value.
