Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly expected to be at the front of the queue for the potential transfer of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Sweden international is in the form of his life at the moment, tearing it up in the Portuguese league and the Champions League, with a stunning record of nine goals in his last three games, and a total of 23 goals in 17 games in all competitions so far this season.

According to the Daily Star, Man Utd and Chelsea look set to be the frontrunners to sign Gyokeres, while they could be given a boost as his asking price could drop to just £63m next summer, according to the Telegraph.

Gyokeres’ release clause is higher than that, but the Telegraph suggest that Sporting will be prepared to let him go on something of a discount deal, which would certainly represent a major bargain.

Should Viktor Gyokeres join Man United or Chelsea?

Gyokeres will surely be ambitious enough to want to test himself in a more competitive league, and where better than the English top flight?

Still, the 26-year-old will also need to choose his next club carefully, and there are potential issues with both United and Chelsea.

The Red Devils may be about to hire Sporting manager Ruben Amorim, who could be the ideal manager to continue working with Gyokeres, but Old Trafford has also proven to be something of a graveyard for players’ careers in recent times.

So many big names such as Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Antony have flopped at United in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, and Gyokeres might do well to stay away.

Chelsea also need a top striker to build around, so that could be a good destination for Gyokeres, even if there would be risks associated with moving to Stamford Bridge as well.

The Blues haven’t been particularly stable in recent times, with frequent manager changes and a large turnover of players

These don’t seem like ideal environments for Gyokeres, so he might do well to wait and see what other opportunities come along, as he surely won’t be short of suitors from elsewhere.

  2. why do you think sporting would let its main asset leave for less than his rescission clause?
A player who will certainly score more than 10 goals in the Champions League, and considering the amount that current English clubs spend on their reinforcements, do you really think that 100 million euros is a lot?
