Tottenham are monitoring highly rated Southampton left-back Luke Shaw with a view to making a summer bid for the 17 year old.

The North London club are said to be one of many sides interested in the teenage wide-man but will hope that an early display of interest when the transfer window re-opens will help them see off interest from the likes of Arsenal and Man United.

This source believes that Daniel Levy does not see such a move as in any way linked to the future of another former Saints star, Gareth Bale, though one may feel that the timing of interest in a like for like replacement would be more than a tad coincidental.

Daniel Levy is reportedly readying a move worth £15m for the Southampton man, with £8m of the deal being up front.

Such an offer for a player who though clearly talented, who has made just 20 top tier appearances, may be tough for the South Coast side to resist, especially if the player himself were to push for an exit.

Villas-Boas is apparently unconvinced by Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s quality and though Jan Vertonghen has proved himself more than able to fill the left-back role, the Belgian has also impressed this season in a centre-back role and Shaw may therefore be seen as an ideal candidate to fill the spot in the long term.
