Liverpool continue to track Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld according to the Daily Mirror who is reportedly targeting a move to either Premier League or Bundesliga this summer.

The 24 year old has helped his Amsterdam side clinch three successive Eredivisie titles and may well feel it’s time for a new challenge and Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring in the Belgian international as he seeks to strengthen his Anfield defence.

Alderweireld has talked up the chance of a move away from Ajax, stating;

“England and Germany are the best leagues where I think I can take the next step,”

“I have to go somewhere where I can play football a bit and where my style of play suits.”

“On the other hand, I do not want to play for a team at the bottom of their league. I want to leave Ajax for a nice club, otherwise I’ll just stay in Amsterdam.”

Rodgers has seen Jamie Carragher hang up his boots and Slovakian Martin Skrtel may well be set to leave the Merseyside club having been frozen out of first team affairs in the second half of 2012/13.

Liverpool have already brought in Kolo Toure from Man City on a free transfer and the addition of Alderweireld, who can play at centre-back or at right-back, would certainly beef up the club’s defensive options.

The Antwerp born defender has made 181 appearances for Ajax in all competitions and has 24 national team caps to his name.
