Everton have officially announced the signing of highly-rated Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Joel Robles.

The Spanish youngster becomes Everton manager Roberto Martinez’s third signing from former club Wigan in two days, following their relegation to the Championship, with Robles following Arouna Kone and Antolin Alcaraz to Goodison Park. Robles, who spent the second-half of last season on loan at Wigan, has joined the Toffee’s on a five-year contract, for an undisclosed fee.

Robles was hugely impressive when taking over the reins from Ali Al Habsi late on in the season, playing an integral part in their FA Cup success, but has yet to secure a place at parent club Atletico Madrid following the departure of David De Gea from the club, seeing them loan in Chelsea youngster Thibaut Courtois for a third successive season.

A statement on Atletico’s website read: “Atletico Madrid and Everton have reached an agreement for the transfer of Joel Robles to the English club.

“The goalkeeper, who ended last season playing on loan at Wigan, will compete in the Premier League following the agreement reached between the three parties. In our club we wish him luck in this new stage of his career.”

Robles will contend with Tim Howard for the starting spot in Everton’s line up next season, but with the 34-year old showing signs of regression, Robles’ promotion to the Everton first team could be earlier than expected. He is certainly their long-term answer at goalkeeper.
